Nostaliga Critic vs. Nostalgia Chick

Not too long ago, I was introduced to the fact that there was a perfectly marvelous source of entertainment lurking about inter webs. An entertainment that ruined childhood memories, introduced me to others that I had not known of, made me fond of, and then ruined as well. This God among Gods, King of Sarcasam, Guru of Shouting in a High Pitched Squeal, the original That Guy With the Glasses himself... The Nostaligia Critic.
He's the perfect example of internet fame. The man has his own deviant artist, two movies, hundreds of reviews under his belt, a raging fandom, multiple personalities, his own website, his very own page on Cracked, started multiple internet memes, and goes to cons as a guest speaker. He has done more than most people who attempt to be critics of anything.

For example did you know that he has his very own IMdB page? He does. You go ahead and google it, I'll wait.
I have enjoyed all of his reviews, and for good reason. He has an excellent grasp of comedic timing, and enough knowledge of the different aspect of film to prevent the reviews from being nothing more then senseless, self centered ranting. He does indeed "go one step beyond."
Plus he's wonderfully quoteable.

There is only one thing I can think of that I feel the Nostalgia Critic did wrong. He unleashed an unspeakable horror on our world... It started innocently enough in a contest... and ended in this....

"I am so incredibly bratty! Teehee!"
The Nostalgia Chick.

Oh. My. God. I hate her. She not only destroys everything I love, but she does it in such an assanine, self-serving manner! Her first few videos were all right, she actually followed the format that Nostalgia Critic set up, somewhat. However, as she grew more confident in her abilities, she took some artistic liberties.  Such as using the reviews as a podium for all her friends to get a few minutes of fame.

Yes, I know that Nostalgia Critic does that too, but he does it relatively sparingly. It seems that Nostalgia Chick can't go a single review without pulling up one or more of her back up dancers.

Also, she does not actually go through the movies and shows properly. She just throws little clips at you, and then whines about how historically inaccurate it is, how anti-feminist it is, or starts something and turns it into something else.
"I can do whatever I want cause I'm famous bitches!"

Now, to be fair, I did like the double review she and Nostalgia Critic did of Fern Gully. And her musical reviews have certainly been informative.  I might like her better if she say... stuck to musicals, and I admit to being extremely annoyed at most of today's feminists who really haven't suffered through anything that bad. But she is tied to the Nostaligic name and as such, I just don't think she is up to snuff. Change her to Musical Chick or something like that, but don't tie her in with the Nostalgia Critic. In my humble opinion, they simply are not in the same league.

Plus I like Arwen, and Nostalgia Chick ruined her in Suburban Knights. In an un-funny way.
See, you made her cry

  1. I have no like or dislike of either Nostalgia Critic or the Nostalgia Chick. Both of them are equally annoying.

You could have used a better adjective besides 'rape'. I can think of a lot like you know "destroyed". Last I checked we're not in the 1960s and rape is not a joke - so I don't understand why you use it so lightly.

In addition to that, feminism is a broad movement that supports equal rights and treating women as equals. I don't see why there would be a "standard of hardship" that people have to have to be a 'proper' feminist like you're implying.

And part of that feminism is calling things out when it treads murky waters and the critical thought necessay to understand that without that challenge, nothing can or will change.

  2. I'm sorry you feel that way about my opinion :)

  3. Thank you for changing one of the sentences. You're still missing: " An entertainment that raped childhood memories, introduced me to others that I had not known of, made me fond of, and then raped as well."

I'm not sorry for pointing out that your opinion is warped.

Your opinion is a hefty, implied "my life is harder than yours therefore my opinion on what feminism should be the gold standard".

I don't know you, that's true. For all I know you've had a really shit life. Maybe you've had to struggle for everything you've ever wanted both financially and emotionally; been sexually assaulted; mentally abused; socially isolated; bullied; racially discriminated etc etc.

But I can't stand watching someone blunder along without thinking about broader implications of society, feminism due to your own privilege and your "woe-is-me" entitlement.

How is that fair to anyone who believes that women and men should be equal? Or as you seem to imply "only people who have had at least as much hardship as I can qualify as being a proper feminist".

This is the problem I have with your article and opinion.

  4. Apparently you seem to have mistaken the meaning of the word "rape" here. So let's recap.

Rape is forced, unwanted sexual intercourse. Rape is forced, unwanted intercourse. Rape is not being defeated in a video game or having memories of one's childhood destroyed. That's it, no excuses, no "but everybody uses it that way so its okay!/the meaning has chaaaaaaanged."

No, it's NOT okay because others use it incorrectly.

No, the meaning has NOT changed.

Rape MEANS rape and using it to mean lesser non-violent or faux "trauma-inducing" incidents is making light of the actual act of rape.

"... and I admit to being extremely annoyed at most of today's feminists who really haven't suffered through anything that bad."

Do you realize what you're implying with that statement?

I'm going to go ahead and guess "no".

What you're implying with that statement is that to be a real true blue feminist you have to have suffered through some hardship and let's assume that hardship is rape or sexual abuse of some kind. So if you believe in feminist ideas but have never been raped, then you have no cause for complaint. Then you're not a REAL feminist.

That is some straight-up bullshit and repeating it or believing it is giving support to people who are misogynists and anti-feminists.

So let me clear up something.

There is NO "test of hardship" or a similar requirement to be a feminist.

The only thing you have to believe in to be a feminist is equal rights for men and women. The right to vote, to have an opinion and have that opinion heard. The right to fair trial, the right to live happily and free, etc etc. You get the point.

In conclusion, your opinion is wrong and your use of the word "rape" is wrong.

    1. Opinions cannot be right or wrong as they are only opinions. They can however be agreed or disagreed with and I respect you disagreeing with my opinion.

I did change "rape" as I did not mean to offend and quite frankly never thought anyone would read this blog and I mainly use it for my own thoughts. As it is apparently becoming more mainstream, I did change it.

In terms of hardships, i was referring to those who claim to be feminists yet do nothing. They have not experienced the things they complain about and do nothing to end them. They instead hide behind the word in order to complain about everything and anything, destroying the hard work of others, undermining the hard work done by true feminist. I know several people like this, and have gotten very good at picking them out. I admit to them infuriating me and perhaps in that fury, I did not word things as well as I could have. Again I never expected anyone to read this blog. But, I will not re-word the entire article as that would be far more effort than I'm willing to put into something I only meant as a sounding board for certain ideas and a place to release other thoughts. Nothing I write do I ever intend to be taken seriously. I'm sorry that you spent time and energy under that impression.

    2. Also, I looked up rape and one of it's definitions is "an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation." and "to plunder (a place); despoil." Though the most common definitions do apply to forced sexual intercourse, it doesn't just apply to people, it can also apply to country side for example, or things held dear to oneself.

  6. Some of you people completely missed the point of this didn't you. Yes lindsey ellis is a moron whos reviews have gotten worse with each one. I can not stand this dumb hipster bitch , she tries to act morally superior and so damn smart because she went to film school. As for reviewing you can't even call it that , she nitpicks and cameos those moronic friends of hers. On the rape thing , words evolve get over yourselves.

  7. Well, I guess some people will agree with you and others won't. I personally LOVE Lindsey Ellis and her insight into things. I have my own opinions separate from her's, and NONE of her videos have ever ruined anything for me. Like she says in her LOTR, TTT review, 'You CAN like something and ALSO review it in an objective light and look at its flaws.'

And she DOES review things, in a much more entertaining and helpful way than the Critic does, in my opinion. And if you think she should have STAYED to the structure the critic gave her, I think that's sad. Her Pocahontas review, which I believe was her first review, is THE blandest and least interesting review to date.
